Just in time for the Great Backyard Bird Count, a bird-feeder project that introduces simple woodworking skills to kids!
This bird-feeder was adapted from a project in "Easy Woodstuff for Kids" by David Thompson
Materials Needed:
Thick, dry (not rotten) branch. My branch measures about 3" in diameter.
Rope/twine/webbing/etc
A tin base (I got mine at the 1$ store)
Screws
Tools Needed:
A drill & drill bits & screwdriver attachment
Handsaw
A clamp (1 or 2)
Directions:
Clamp your branch to your work surface and saw a 1.5 to 2 foot length off your branch. If you don't have 2 clamps, you'll probably need an assistant to help hold the branch still. Stand the stick on end and figure out which side makes the stick stand up the straightest. Attach your feeding tin base to that side. Simply center your tin onto the branch and screw some screws in until you feel it's sturdy enough to support those squirrels - I mean birds. Next, drill a hole at the top of the stick using a nice and thick drill bit - you can determine the size you need based upon the type of rope/twine/webbing/etc you are using. String your rope through and go on outside and hang it on the tree - oh and don't forget to bring the birdseed with you!
This is great! I'm trying to dig up bird related projects for the count and this is perfect! Thanks so much, I'll be linking.
